RALPHS BAY FAIR TOMORROW AS CANAL ESTATE FIGHT CONTINUES
Save Ralphs Bay Inc. is holding a Ralphs Bay Fair in the Lauderdale Hall between 10 am and 2 pm tomorrow, Sunday November 30th.
The purpose of the Fair is to celebrate, share information and raise much-needed funds which will be used to oppose the Walker Corporation’s plan to bulldoze the Ralphs Bay Conservation Area and turn it into a Gold Coast-style canal estate.
Save Ralphs Bay Inc. expects the Resource Planning and Development Commission (RPDC) to hold hearings into the matter in 2009, as part of its Integrated Assessment of the proposal.
“This is only the fifth Project of State Significance to be assessed by the RPDC”, said Submissions Coordinator Jane MacDonald. “The last one was the pulp mill, so you can see the State Government has classified Walker’s proposed canal estate as being right up there at the top of the scale, in terms of its massive potential impacts.”
Save Ralphs Bay Chair, Bill Edmunds, said, “The Ralphs Bay Fair is for all the family. We’ll be having a free sausage sizzle and face painting for the kids. Birds Tasmania and the Tasmanian Marine Naturalists’ Association will join us in providing information to the community.
“Of course, this is a very important fundraiser for us too, so we’ll have plenty of beautiful Ralphs Bay calendars and cards, quality tea-towels, mugs, stickers and a range of distinctive individually embroidered items.”
Ms. MacDonald said, “We strongly suspect the Integrated Impact Statement for the canal estate will land in the RPDC in January or February. What a battle this will be. However, before the battle begins, we will be celebrating the great strength of our community on Sunday, and we look forward to sharing this day of celebration with our supporters.”
