WORLD WETLANDS DAY, Feb. 2, 2010
Tomorrow, Feb 2, is World Wetlands Day. This year’s theme, “Wetlands, Biodiversity and Climate Change” is a reminder that 2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity.
Save Ralphs Bay Inc. notes that, despite worldwide recognition of the importance of wetlands such as the Ralphs Bay sandflats and saltmarshes in maintaining biodiversity, the Ralphs Bay Conservation Area is still vulnerable to destruction by the proposed Walker Corporation canal estate.
“We now await Walker Corp.’s further submission on the Draft Integrated Assessment Report (DIAR)”, said Save Ralphs Bay spokeswoman, Jane MacDonald. “Although all other submissions on the DIAR were submitted by the due date last November, Walker Corp. has insisted on making a second submission. Once again, Walker Corp. is trying to call the shots, and the community must wait again before the Planning Commission’s final recommendation can be handed down. It is to be hoped that the assessment process can be completed before March 20th, and the Ralphs Bay sandflats will be saved from Walker Corp’s planned destruction.”
