Letters: To Walker Corp: “you need to be accountable for your actions!”

written by:Jane G.

Dear Walker Corporation

Re The Development of Ralph’s Bay, Lauderdale Tasmania

While recently in Tasmania visiting my family I came
across the plans for the redevelopment of Lauderdale
and was absolutely horrified by the proposal at least
in part because of the failure of your organisation to
adequately address the communities concerns and
questions. Your booklet detailing the development
while visually appealing does little to address any
concerns about the detrimental environmental impact of
your proposal. Your sweetener to provide sewerage is a
transparent ploy to get the community to ignore the
incredibly negative impact of your proposal.

I have many, many concerns about this proposal and
these are some of these:

Why do you believe Lauderdale is an excellent site for
a canal development when these developments are
outlawed in NSW due to the significant coastal and
environmental degradation caused by such developments?
I would expect that your organisation would be well
aware of this being based in New South Wales. Why
would this development be any different?

Why are you importing a bird expert from the UK when
Birds Tasmania could adequately fulfil this role? Is
this reminiscent of the cash for comments scandal of
last year and because Birds Tasmania will provide an
answer you don’t want?

Walker Corporation to date have been unable to answer
almost all questions regarding the environmental
impact of the development which is alarming
considering this proposal has been under discussion
with the Tasmanian Government for some time now. This
leads to one of 2 conclusions 1) You have not done the
research and I doubt that as this company is a veteran
of many developments or 2) the research is contrary to
what your aim is?

Are you aware that there is a possibility that the
silt dredged up and proposed to be used by Walker
Corporation as landfill could be contaminated? What
would you propose to do if this was the case? I don’t
see a mention of any of this in your glossy brochure.

Walker Corporation you need to be accountable for your
actions!

Public land such as that in Lauderdale should be just
that - PUBLIC land. This land was not set aside to be
exploited by developers such as you, especially when
you only interest in Tasmania and it’s people, is as
your latest cash cow.  Leave Tasmanian land for all
Tasmanians!

Kind Regards,

Jane G.
