Letters: “Remember the personal cost communities and individuals pay”

written by:Anahita Jungalwalla - North Hobart, Tasmania

Time and time again, Tasmania’s laws and Government lets down the community of our State. At Lauderdale, as in many places before and no doubt many yet to come, the local community fights tooth and nail for a lifestyle and environment thought to be secure. Less than five years ago the same community fought a similar battle against Tominex. Fortunately they won, who knows this time.

In the process however, win or lose, lives are put on hold, families, friendships and marriages pushed to the limits by stress. All else falls by the wayside as “everyday Tasmanians” have to pool all their resources and energy to battle a multi-million dollar Goliath.

The Ralphs Bay area has already been classified as a Conservation Area for migratory and local wading birds. Yet at the drop of a hat, or rather instant cash, this status can be revoked and the fight begins anew. Tell me, what is the point of protecting our assets if fast cash is all that’s needed to make that protection void?

Whatever the outcome at Ralphs Bay, win or lose, please remember the personal cost local communities and individuals pay to protect these areas and values for all Tasmanians.
