GREENS TABLE BILL TO BAN CANAL STYLE DEVELOPMENTS IN TASMANIA

written by:Greens MHA, Nick McKim

The Tasmanian Greens today tabled in Parliament their Ban Canal Estate Developments Bill 2004.

Greens Opposition Planning Spokesperson Nick McKim MHA said that the Bill was based on NSW law which prohibited canal style developments on environmental grounds.

“Bob Carr’s Government is no friend of the environment, but the challenge now for the Lennon Labor Government is to clear the very low bar set for them by their NWS colleagues.”

“The Greens Ban on Canal Estate Developments Bill 2004 is based on similar legislation in force in NSW which bans further canal estate developments in that state,” Mr McKim said.

“If it is good enough for Labor in NSW, it should be good enough for Labor in Tasmania.”

“The Greens’ Ban on Canal Estate Developments Bill 2004 would ensure that the disastrous Ralphs Bay proposal could not proceed and continues our support for locals fighting to protect their lifestyles and Tasmania’s environment.”

“This Bill is part of the Greens’ ongoing campaign for the state-based strategic planning framework to implement the State Coastal policy.”

“Our Bill will ensure that parts of Tasmania’s coastline do not end of resembling the Gold Coast,” Mr McKim said.
