Report from Hobart Airport - 15km NE of Ralphs Bay
Temperature: 12°C (54°F)
Hi all....it’s on again, the wonderful SRB Calendar 2009. This is a major fundraising opportunity for SRB to help fund all those expert witnesses and legal people to help us respond fully to the Walker Corporation’s Integrated Impact Statement on the proposed ‘Lauderdale Quay’ development.
Would you like to have your favourite photos of Ralphs Bay considered for inclusion in next year’s Ralphs Bay Calendar? We would love to have copies of your photos if you have the time and energy to get out and take some interesting shots around Ralphs Bay.
If you are interested, please read these specifications carefully....
Here is how it works:
1. We can only use digital photos. All photos must be digital, taken by you, and made available as JPG or TIF files, burnt onto a CD.
2. Size of File / Picture. The calendar features two sizes of images, Large and Small.
a. Large. These can only be taken using a digital camera that is rated > 8+ megapixels but must be taken on the maximum size available. If your cameral is an 8 megapixel camera and you are taking small size photos to email, you need to change your settings to take the maximum size available.
The bigger the file size (eg taken using a 10+ megapixel camera), the more flexibility there is to crop and adjust the pics. This can be an advantage as we can turn a good image into an excellent image.
b. Small. These must be taken on a camera with a minimum of 4 megapixel rating, and again taken at the maximum file size. There are only limited opportunities for small images in the calendar.
3. Colour or Black & White? We have normally used colour, but feel free to submit a black and white if you think it is stunning.
4. Picture Guidelines. All pictures need to be taken on or around or looking to Ralphs Bay (Lauderdale). Landscapes, sunsets, sunrises, windy and cold seascapes, birds in flight, views across to Mount Wellington, aerial shots, close ups of shells, drift wood, salt marsh, snow, frost on grasses, windsurfers, birds...are just some ideas. We haven’t had a black swan picture yet!
5. Selection of Images for the Calendar. Basically, our calendar designer makes the main selections with input from the Calendar coordinating team. The objective is to choose the best images from a technical (ie file size), and aesthetic view point, with balance across the calendar (remembering we consider what has already been used in the previous two calendars). We are choosing images that will have impact and help sell the calendar...this is a fundraiser and not an exercise in photographic democracy…
... so please don’t get upset if your beautiful image is not selected....it could have been for a whole host of reasons.
6. Date of Final Submission. We need all images by Friday August 8th at the latest so that we can rapidly complete the calendar and get it to the printers. Please post your CD to Attn: Ray Langmaid, Digital Ink, GPO Box 1667, Hobart, Tas, 7001 or drop off at Digital Ink, on level 2, 24 Davey Street, Hobart.
7. Your Information. Make sure that your name and contact details are with the disk that you drop off. We may need to get back to you if we have any difficulties opening the file. If one of your images is selected, we will want you to provide us with written confirmation that SRB has the right to print your image. The calendar will credit each image with the photographer’s name.
8. Any Questions? If you have any questions, please contact, Bill MacDonald at billmac1@internode.on.net
The SRB Calendar is a wonderful way to promote the beauty of the Bay and why it is worth protecting.
