Save Ralphs Bay Inc.
Save Ralphs Bay Inc. (SRB) is a community action group with a strong regional support base. SRB was formed in March 2004 in response to the Walker Corporation's proposal to excavate the Ralphs Bay Conservation Area at Lauderdale and construct a canal style housing estate in the bay.
SRB's constitutional objectives are to oppose this and any other inappropriate developments at Ralphs Bay, to work towards enhanced protection of the natural, aesthetic and community values of Ralphs Bay and to promote an approach to coastal planning in Tasmania that will prevent future inappropriate developments in coastal areas.
SRB provides well researched information to appropriate bodies and maintains an open information base for supporters with up-to-date information on the progress of decision making regarding the proposal.
In support of its stated objectives, SRB has networked widely, researched many issues and maintained a strong public information campaign through media liaison, public information evenings with expert speakers, community expo days, rallies in City Hall, information stalls in the community and at the Coast to Coast Conference, newsletters, political lobbying at all governmental levels and preparation of numerous submissions.
SRB was the Community Groups Project winner for the 2005 Dr. Edward Hall Environment Awards and was inducted into the Hobart City Council Hall of Fame.

The draft State Coastal Policy and its associated Model Standards for coastal management would allow the construction of canal housing estates in Tasmania, Save Ralphs Bay Inc said today.
“It is depressingly obvious that the policy has been skewed to favour development over environmental protection,” SRB Inc representative, Cassy O’Connor said.
“Specific mention is made in notes to the draft Model Standards, enabling development which impacts on the near-shore seabed, where excavation, reclamation and dredging are required, and most alarmingly, acid soil risk assessment.
“There is only one type of coastal development which threatens such grave impacts, and the Walker Corporation wanted to build one on Ralphs Bay.
AIRLIE WARD: The Premier says there has been no outrage, that, you know, that you...are you and your lobby group simply the loudest voices opposing - were you the loudest voices opposing - this development?
CASSY O’CONNOR: It’s an absolute insult to concerned and thinking Tasmanians who love their coastline to try and paint them as a noisy minority. There are people...we’ve been in touch with people over the past 18 months of this campaign all over Tasmania, particularly on the other side of the River Derwent, and we know that the concern is felt statewide. To try to write us off as a noisy minority, it just shows how out of touch Paul Lennon is on this particular issue.
